The Word of God, the Bible, is the only foundation of our lives. There is power, healing, comfort, joy, peace, wisdom, and so much more in His Word. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Reading His Word and listening to His voice is essential for feeding our souls[1 Peter 2:2,3]. Just as we need food to keep our bodies alive, our souls need spiritual food from His Word to stay healthy and strong. The prophet Jeremiah says he ate God’s words. This means he was hungry to hear from God and eager to take in every word God said. Words from God filled Jeremiah with joy and filled his heart with delight [Jer. 15:16]. The prophet Isaiah also wrote about listening to the Lord. He wrote that the Lord woke him up each morning to listen and be instructed, and how listening to God is like eating what is good that we may live (Isaiah 50:4; 55:2,3]. God’s Word is not only food, it is also light. King David wrote that God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path [Psalm 119:105]. God’s word is eternal which means it lives forever and never dies [Is. 40:7,8; 1 Peter 1:24,25].
