MIGHTY GOD!

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6
Jesus is not only our Wonderful Counselor, but also our Mighty God. Today we are meditating on another name of Jesus – Mighty God. Isaiah 9:6 reads, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” One of the names of Jesus is Mighty God. One reason He is mighty is because the government will be on his shoulders. This means He is holding great power and also great responsibility to be bearing the governments of the entire world. Jesus Christ came to this earth to strengthen the weak and lift up those who are humble. Those who had been rejected and were outcasts were welcomed into His company. While Jesus was doing His earthly ministry, He did many wonderful miracles. He is mighty in power. Dead were raised, deaf could hear, lame could walk, blind could see, and sinners were restored all in His powerful Name. He turned water into wine, fed thousands of people with very little, calmed storms, and walked on water. The Bible is filled with so many accounts of His mighty work here on Earth. John 21: 25 states, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” This means that only a portion of what Jesus did here on Earth was even recorded.
One example of Jesus mighty power is found in Mark 4:35-41. Jesus was traveling with His disciples by boat when a strong storm hit. Jesus was sleeping during it, but His disciples were very afraid. They woke Him and asked Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” The next verse says, “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the wave, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” Jesus is a mighty God because He has power even over nature itself. By simply speaking, Jesus can make anything happen. There is power in the words of Jesus.
In this life we face so many storms and trials. Just like the disciples we may get worried and wonder, “God, do You care about me?” The answer is a resounding yes. Sometimes people wonder why bad things happen and the storms come even when they are following Jesus faithfully. In the above passage Jesus and His disciples all were in the same boat and going through a storm. The Bible does not promise us there will be no storms, actually it promises us that the storms will come. However, it also reassures us that a Mighty God is with us. We need not fear. John 16:33 reads, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus tells us here that the storms are coming. However, He also tells us to have courage because He has already overcome this world. Even death could not overcome Him. He overcame death and rose again on the third day. My dear friends, what a Mighty God we serve! Praise the Lord!
During this Christmas season, let us remember that Jesus is the Mighty God. You may be going through a hard situation or facing problems in your life right now. Maybe you have family problems. Maybe you are expecting a miracle. Jesus is a Mighty God. He is able to provide and care for you, your family, your situation, and your community. He is able to build up and restore what is broken. Take heart. He has overcome this world. We just need to keep our faith solely in Him.
Prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Thank you so much for sending Your Son Jesus Christ to take all of the government on His shoulders. Thank You, Jesus, that You are our Mighty God who came in humility and power. Help us to understand that You are able to do wonderful and mighty things for Your people. Amen.
